Background on the City of Corona.
The City of Corona is located roughly 45 miles south-east of Los Angeles, California in Riverside County.
The city was originally named South Riverside, after the city of Riverside just a few miles east of their present location.
In 1896, the citizens of South Riverside began a movement to disassociate themselves as an extension of the city of Riverside, and a vote of incorporation was made on July 13, 1896. On that day, they changed the
name of their city to Corona.
Corona in spanish means "crown," and is aptly nicknamed "the circle city" after the circular Grand Avenue, where later in 1913, 1914, and 1916 they held three international road races dubbed "The Corona Road Race" as a way to celebrate California's Admission's Day on September 9th. Racing greats, such as Ralph DePalma, Barney Oldfield, Terrible Teddy Tetzlaff, and Earl Cooper were there.
Corona was also known as the "lemon capital of the world" because the first lemon processing plant in the United States was built here in 1915.
The world's largest cheese processing plant was also here on Lincoln Avenue, the same property where Desi Arnaz (from "I Love Lucy") horse ranch used to be.
Corona Municipal Airport is 3 miles north-west of the city, and is well away from Los Angeles' congested airspace. The airport makes a great starting point in flying to popular local destinations, such as Catalina Island, Big Bear, and Las Vegas.
